In a world driven by status, likes, and deadlines, it’s easy to forget the essence of our creation. Our days are filled with noise—notifications, schedules, work, and societal expectations. In the midst of all this, the believer must ask: Is my heart still beating for Allah, or has it started beating for the dunya?
The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) beautifully said, “In the body, there is a piece of flesh. If it is sound, the whole body is sound; and if it is corrupted, the whole body is corrupted. That piece is the heart.” (Bukhari & Muslim)
Today, hearts are tested like never before—tested by comparison, self-doubt, temptations, and distractions. But remember this: the heart that beats for Allah is always a stranger among the hearts that beat for the world. And that is not a sign of failure—it’s a sign of faith.
How Do We Keep Our Hearts Attached to Allah?
- Consistent Dhikr (Remembrance of Allah): A tongue that remembers Allah leads to a heart that feels Allah. Simple phrases like SubhanAllah, Alhamdulillah, and Allahu Akbar refresh the soul and protect it from heedlessness.
- Choosing the Right Company: Surround yourself with those who remind you of the Hereafter. A single friend who uplifts your faith is more valuable than a thousand who pull you away from it.
- Engaging with the Qur’an: The Qur’an isn’t just a book of rules—it’s a book of mercy, light, and healing. Even a few verses daily, understood and reflected upon, can nourish your heart like nothing else.
- Being Part of the Community: Isolation breeds spiritual weakness. Join circles of knowledge, attend the masjid regularly, and stay connected with righteous gatherings.
- Dua (Supplication): Ask Allah often: “Ya Muqallib al-qulub, thabbit qalbi ‘ala deenik” – “O Turner of the hearts, keep my heart firm upon Your religion.”
In the end, our goal isn’t to have perfect hearts—but striving hearts. Hearts that, despite falling, keep returning to Allah. Remember, a heart that beats for Allah might be lonely in this world, but it will never be empty.
